A number of local athletes made the medal podium and one broke his own state record at the AHSAA state track and field meets this past weekend. The Class 1A, 2A and 3A meets were held in Cullman and the Class 4A, 5A, 6A and 7A meets took place in Gulf Shores.
Coosa Christian’s L.J. Mostella took home a pair of first-place gold medals in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. He helped the Conquerors finish sixth out of 31 teams.
Gaston’s Kodie Bogle set a new state record in the javelin with his gold medal-winning throw of 184-00, an effort that was 10 feet longer than his first place throw at the 2023 state meet.
Also winning a state championship was Gadsden City’s Nyla Franklin, who won the Class 6A high jump title with a leap of 5-06.00.
Winning the second-place silver was Hokes Bluff’s Conner Wellingham in the Class 3A boys javelin and the Coosa Christian girls 4×400-meter dash team of Natalie Delp, Maryanne Wright, Ellene East and Alexis Ferguson.
Capturing the third-place bronze was Southside’s Evan Christopher in the Class 5A boys 3200-meter run; Westbrook Christian’s Brodey Wood in the Class 3A boys javelin; the Coosa Christian boys 4×100-meter relay team of Grayson Malone, Drake Dupree, Hayden Pearce and Joseph East; the West End girls 4×800-meter relay team of Jada Wright, Kennedi Nix, Karlee Tarpley and Kaylee Tarpley.
