Conquerors lose to Winterboro in opener

Winterboro defeated Coosa Christian, 33-6, on Friday at WHS.

“There were too many mistakes, too many dropped balls and too many missed tackles,” Coosa Christian head coach Jason Touart said. “We weren’t ready to play. We had two fumbles in the first half. We’re young, we’re learning and we’re getting better every week, though. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’ll get better.”

Led by quarterback Clay Twymon, the Bulldogs put together a methodical eight-play, 62-yard opening drive capped by a 3-yard run by Jutorrius Cook. Cook missed the extra point, but Winterboro took a 6-0 lead.

After securing a first down, the Conquerors’ first drive stalled when senior quarterback Johnny Grizzard was sacked by defensive end B.J. Twymon on a third-and-eight play.

On Winterboro’s second possession, a 58-yard scramble by Clay Twymon set up a 1-yard touchdown run by B.J. Twymon. Cook converted the two-point conversion with a two-yard run for a 14-0 lead.

Winterboro running back Jaquan Jackson carried the ball twice for 16 yards on a four-play, 23-yard scoring drive sealed by his 10-yard run. Cook missed the extra point, leaving the score 20-0 in Winterboro’s favor.

Bulldog backup quarterback Brady Wideman completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Phillip Cook, and Winterboro had a g 26-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

After a Coosa fumble, Winterboro had the ball on the Conqueror 28-yard line.

Jackson only needed one play to carry the ball 28 yards for the Bulldogs’ fifth and final touchdown of the evening. Jutorrius Cook connected on the extra point, extending Winterboro’s lead to 33-0.

Grizzard scored a touchdown for Coosa Christian on a 2-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Winterboro’s defense forced four turnovers en route to the victory.

For the Conquerors, Randy Washington. Jr., rushed for 106 yards on 14 carries, while Johnny Grizzard added 42 yards on 11 attempts. Grizzard also completed eight passes for 82 yards.

Wesley Grizzard and Jace Mills each had three receptions. 

Jace Mills and Wesley Grizzard each had eight tackles, while Drake Burger and Mikey Green both had seven. 

Dawson Ashley had two sacks. 

The Conquerors begin region play on Friday at home against Valley Head.
