Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Gadsden Alumnae Chapter recently presented EMBODI – Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence.
The program is designed to refocus the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta with the support and action of other major organizations on the plight of African American males.
The feature speaker was Jason Smoots.
Smoots is a 1998 graduate of Litchfield High School, who now lives in Raleigh, N.C.
He is a professional track and field athlete, serving as high school track and field sprint coach at Southeast High School. Smoots attended North Carolina Central University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Administration.
Among Smoots accomplishments: 2006 World Cup 4x100m relay Gold Medalist; 2003 Pan Am Games 4x100m relay Gold Medalist; six time NCAA Division II National Champion; eight time CIAA Champion; three time Division II Athlete of the Year; 14 time All American.
Smoots is the only athlete in NCAA Division II track and field history to win three consecutive indoor sprint national championships. He is the Division II record holder in the 60m dash (6.55).
The city of Durham, N.C., proclaimed Oct. 26, 2002 “Jason Smoots Day.”
Smoot’s parents are George H. Smoots, retired Chief in the U.S. Navy and Dr. Donna Smoots of the Gadsden City School System.
