House Minority Leader Craig Ford responds to allegations against Bentley:

“When the Republicans took over the state government, they promised they were going to be the party of ethics; that they would lead us like Moses to the Promised Land. They made promises that they simply have not kept, and I hope the people of Alabama will remember that.

“No one rejoices in the downfall of another person. Accusations have been made against the highest law enforcement officer in Alabama by the man who hired him, while the governor has been accused of using his office to cover up his infidelity – the same governor who said, ‘If you’re not a Christian, you are not my brother.’

“Democrats are not rejoicing today in what has happened. We believe everyone is our brother, and our focus will continue to be on representing the people who elected us.”

“This has been a sad, disheartening week for the State of Alabama. The news of Gov. Bentley’s relationship with Rebekah Caldwell Mason has embarrassed our state on a national level, and become a distraction for the legislature at a time when we need to be focused on solving the state’s budget problems. I am also troubled by the shadow organization that is using dark money to pay Mrs. Mason’s salary, and by the recent firings and shakeup at the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

“For these reasons, I am calling on Gov. Bentley to resign from office, for Rebekah Mason to resign her state position as ‘Senior Advisor,’ and for Spencer Collier and the other law enforcement officers who were fired or transferred to be reinstated and returned to their positions. It is unacceptable for them to have lost their jobs simply for cooperating with the Attorney General’s office and doing their duty as law enforcement officers.”
