The Rainbow City Lions Club is currently seeking new members. The nonprofit civic club focuses on eyesight and children’s diabetes prevention and support projects.

With only 13 members, the Lions Club is too understaffed to perform eye screenings at local schools, a service they would love to offer again.

The Rainbow City Lions Club offers an $1000 scholarship to a Southside High School senior. The 2016 scholarship winner was Sydney Middleton.

The club sent three Southside students, Erika McGriff, Addie Cardwell and Presley Johnson, to Troy University for the Alabama Lions High School Leadership Forum in June.

The club also sponsors the Southside High Leo Club, a junior Lion’s club.

To further support schools, club members deliver donuts to Rainbow City and Southside school teachers at the start of the school year. The club also helps the local elementary schools with school supplies. The club even helps coordinate the Rainbow City Library end of year reading program. The club sponsors a Boy Scout troop and ball team.

The club recently held a first responder appreciation night.

As part of the eyecare mission of the club, the Lions Club collects used eyeglasses. There are several collection boxes around Rainbow City and the Rainbow City Community Center.

To raise money for all of its projects, the club sells mops and brooms made by the Alabama School for the Blind all year long. In March, the club holds a Pancake Day. The club also sells pecans, cashews and peanuts starting in November at several places throughout Rainbow City, including several banks. To find out more information about the nut sale, call Chris Daniel at Exchange Bank at 256-442-3003.

The Rainbow City Lions Club meets the first and third Monday nights at the Rainbow City Community Center. The club shares a meal at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The club welcomes visitors. For more information, call Joyce Frohock at 256-328-2509 or jifrohock @att.net.
