Local players named to ASWA All-State football teams

Several local high school football players were named to the
2015 Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State teams.

Five players were selected to the first team – Gadsden City
senior offensive lineman Jamahl Jelks and senior receiver Darnell Mooney in
Class 7A, Etowah junior center Peyton Nance and senior linebacker Darius Moore
in Class 5A and Glencoe senior defensive back Pace Ozmint in Class 3A.

A three-year starter for the Titans at tackle, Jelks played
in the Alabama/Mississippi All-State Classic in early December. Mooney, who
made the team in the Athlete category, finished with 37 receptions for 697
yards and nine touchdowns.

Moore had 134 tackles and six sacks, while Nance is a
three-year starter at center. They helped the 2015 Blue Devils post a 7-4
record and qualify for the state playoffs.

A three-time first team All-State selection at safety,
Ozmint finished with over 1,540 total yards and 16 touchdowns while seeing time
at halfback, receiver and kick returner. On defense, he had a team-high 104
tackles along with three interceptions. A finalist for the Class 3A Back of the
Year award, Ozmint helped Glencoe post a 9-2 record and make the state playoffs
for the seventh straight year.

Making the All-State second team were Etowah senior
defensive end Crishun Young, Glencoe senior offensive lineman Jeff Ford and
West End junior receiver Andre Little.

Young, who was a first-team All-State pick last season,
ended up with 84 tackles and 14 sacks. Ford had 25 pancake blocks while grading
out at 95 percent for the season.

Little caught a team-high 46 passes with 734 yards and seven
touchdowns as the Class 2A Patriots their first winning season since 2007.

Garnering honorable mention recognition were Southside
senior kicker Kristian Wilmore in Class 6A, Sardis senior receiver Austin
Hallmark and senior offensive lineman Kyle Murphy in Class 4A and West End
senior quarterback Hunter Grant.

Wilmore was 29-for-31 in extra points and 5-for-6 in field
goals; Hallmark had 47 receptions for 1,006 yards and 12 touchdowns; Murphy
graded out 85 percent or better in every game; and Grant threw for 2,611 yards
and 31 touchdowns and rushed for 817 yards and 12 scores.
