Nine area student-athletes were recently selected to the 2014 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State high school football team.
Class 3A state semifinalist Glencoe placed the most players with five. In addition, Lee Ozmint was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Yellow Jackets to a 13-1 record, a region championship and the school’s first semifinal berth since 1993.
Selected from the Yellow Jackets were senior running back Thomas Ozmint, senior offensive lineman Ty Minshew, senior linebacker Mason Brown, senior defensive lineman Chance Duncan and junior defensive back Pace Ozmint.
Ozmint rushed for 2,316 yards and 27 touchdowns on 299 attempts; Brown finished with 141 tackles and seven sacks; Duncan had 104 tackles and 10.5 sacks; and Ozmint had 94 tackles, two interceptions and five pass breakups.
Other area first-teamers were senior center Nolan Boatner from Class 7A Gadsden City, senior offensive lineman Tyler Carr from Class 6A Southside, junior linebacker Darius Moore from 5A Etowah and senior defensive back Jesse Hubbard from Class 4A Sardis. Moore had 160 tackles and eight sacks, while Hubbard totaled 132 tackles along with five interceptions.
In addition, 14 locals made the second team, including senior linebacker Blair Edwards from Gadsden City; senior wingback Holt Keeling, junior linebacker Hunter Armstrong and sophomore kicker Carter West from Southside; junior running back Paul Ruiz and junior defensive lineman Crishun Young from Etowah; junior running back Keeman Lewis and senior linebacker Bryan Noblitt from Sar-dis; senior linebacker Noah Click from 4A Hokes Bluff; junior offensive lineman Devin Chappell, senior linebacker Javonte Pope and senior defensive back Albert Lewis from 2A Gaston; junior quarterback Hunter Grant from West End; and sophomore receiver Wesley Grizzard from 1A Coosa Christian.
Receiving honorable mention status were Glencoe senior quarterback Dylan Stone, Westbrook Christian senior kicker Chris Underwood (Class 3A) and Gaston senior running back Mitchell Smith.
With the addition of Class 7A, the ASWA changed its format for its All-State team this year, adding a second team and limiting honorable mentions to no more than two at each position. The panel also held a preliminary vote in mid-November in order to pare down the field at the all-state meeting.
The ASWA will release its three finalists for back and lineman of the year in each class on Sunday, Dec. 28. The winners, along with the Mr. Football award, will be revealed at the annual Player of the Year Banquet, to be held in Montgomery on Jan. 14, 2015 and sponsored by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.
