The Summer Enrichment Mentoring Program of Gadsden/Etowah County will kick off its 12th year of providing educational enrichment and character-building guidance – free of charge – for young people in the community.

Dr. Gertie Thompson-Lowe, founder and director of the program, said space limits the number of children who can participate to about 100.

Registration is underway now, and will continue through June 10. Classes begin June 11 at the Alabama Baptist Mission Center at 1431 Chestnut Street in Gadsden.

Dr. Lowe said the program provides breakfast and lunch to students and tutoring that focuses on reading, math and computer skills, as well as addressing other needs attending children might have.

The program is open to children from kindergarten through high school, and they will be instructed by certified teachers.

There will be travel as money permits, Dr. Lowe said, to see and experience “things they aren’t going to see around here.”

All the instruction and other benefits of the program are offered free of change, Dr. Lowe said.

“The success of this program has been due to funds from contributors and sponsors and the community that desires the best for our children,” Dr. Lowe said. “Our children are our future and if they are to improve and move above the statistics where we now stand, its going to take all of us working together.”

The program set goals this year of upgrading equipment and adding additional teachers.

The program continues to seek sponsors and patrons who can contribute financial support. For more information about contributions, contact Dr. Lowe at 256-490-1884.
