Warriors’ Ford, Titans’ Carter recognized by state sportswriters

A pair of local football players garnered statewide recognition this week.

Westbrook Christian senior quarterback Jonathan Ford was both nominated for the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Offensive Player of the Week award and was named to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Prep Spotlight after throwing for five touchdowns – including four in the second quarter – in a 39-34 loss to Ider last Friday (Sept. 14). Ford completed 22-of-38 passes for 316 yards. DeVernon Marshall was Ford’s main target, catching 10 passes for 151 yards and four TDs.

Gadsden City’s Rashad Carter was nominated for the ASWA Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week award after the senior linebacker picked up a fumble and went 65 yards for the game-winning touchdown in the Titans’ 28-21 victory over No. 8 Oxford.

ASWA members from Gadsden, Andalusia, Anniston, Auburn, Birmingham, Brewton, Centre, Cullman, Decatur, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Gardendale, Huntsville, Grove Hill, Mobile, Montgomery, Oneonta, Scottsboro and Tuscaloosa submitted nominations this week.
