Brown, Cone win local junior golf tournament

Tee Brown and Hope Cone were the overall winners in the 2016 Etowah County Junior Golf Tournament played last week at the Gadsden Country Club, Briarmeade, Wills Creek and Silver Lakes courses.

Brown shot an overall score of 213, while Cone finished at 234. It was Cone’s second straight county title. Her three-day total was 13 shots ahead of her nearest competition. Both she and Brown maintained their leads over the three-round tournament.

Brown was tops in the boys age 16-18 A Division, followed by Alex McFarland at 237, Ethan Womack at 239, Gage Ledbetter at 245 and Austin Jenkins at 246.

Blake Maxwell shot a 287 to capture the boys 16-18 B division, followed by A.J. Edge at 311 and Garrett Fairley at 339.
Savannah Hughes was runner-up to Cone in the girls age 13-18 division with a 247 score, followed by Lauren Cole with 257.

Winning the boys age 13-15 A division was Brock McNeely with a score of 231, followed by Michael Rich at 238 and Barnes Stacey at 247.

Ridge McHugh won the boys age 13-15 B division with a score of 287, followed by James Amberson at 293, Benjamin Hall at 303 and Harrison Hood at 371.

Joshua Campbell won the boys age 11-12 division with a 149 score, while Sam Hathcock finishing runner-up at 152. Ella Howard (136) and Shel-by Hughes (142) were the girls 11-2 winner and runner-up, respectively.

Boys age 7-10 results were Aiden Freeman (119), Jaxson McCurdy (127) and Justin Lovoy (128) in the A division; Cove McHugh (128), Eli Edge (130) and Hayes Cosby (146) in the B division; and Jacob Maples (149), Brodie Johnson (163), J.D. Berndt (171) and Harrison Pierce (194) in the C division.

Overall standings were not based on age group divisions but total strokes for the three days. Players were divided into different flights after the first two rounds of play.

In the Champions’ Shootout competition on July 15 at Silver Lakes, Brown held off Cone on the last hole to claim the title. The event consisted of the top 10 players in the championship divisions in a nine-hole competition in which one player is eliminated on each hole until a winner is decided. Also participating were Gage Ledbetter, Michael Rich, Austin Jenkins, Alex McFarland, Ethan Womack, Savannah Hughes, Brock McNeely and Barnes Stacey.

At the tournament awards banquet on July 14 at the Gadsden Senior Activity Center in downtown Gadsden, Jack Sims received the first annual T.J. Butts Memorial “Buddy Golf” award; Lauren Cole received the Dr. Robert Graves’ Good Sportsmanship Award; Barnes Stacey and Savannah Hughes received the Chad Harcrow Most Improved Player award and Sam Hathcock received the Isaac’s Award.
