Gaston High School senior Tanna Lawson signed a scholarship to play volleyball for Gadsden State Community College during a ceremony in the school’s gymnasium on May 9.

Lawson played defensive specialist for Gaston, and was a five year starter.

She won numerous awards in high school, including All-County and All-Area.

Lawson led the Lady Bulldogs to a 30-18 record in 2011, including an appearance in the regional tournament in Pelham.

Gaston head coach Kathy Brown said Lawson was a unique player.

“I have never coached a player quite like Tanna. She always seemed to make plays that looked impossible to make.”

Gadsden State coach Angie Sanders expects alot out of Lawson.

“I watched Tanna play a few times this year and was impressed with the way she played. She gives 110 percent every play. I am proud to have her play for us this fall.”

Lawson is excited about playing college volleyball, but understands the amount of work it takes to get playing time.

“I am not looking to go in and start immediately, but I would like to get playing time quick,” Lawson said. “I am really happy this is a great opportunity to play college.”

Lawson follows in the footsteps of her older sister Kris, who was a standout volleyball player at both Gaston and Gadsden State.

“I hope I can move on and play more at a higher level after Gadsden State,” Lawson said. “Right now, I just want to focus on developing as a successful junior college player.”
