Southside will have the opportunity to defend its Etowah County Schools championship this season.
Last Tuesday (March 1), the Panthers defeated West End, 10-4 and Glencoe, 10-3, to advance to the tournament finals on Friday, March 4.
With the game against West End tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Panthers scored off a wild pitch to take the lead for good.
For Southside, Dre’sen Champagne had three hits, including a home run; Drew McBurnett had three hits and two RBI; Tytan Rich had two hits. Winning pitcher Tucker Pearce struck out three in five innings.
Colby Pierce had a three RBI double for the Patriots, while Tyler Jones had two hits.
Against Glencoe for the Panthers, Champagne and Jacob McFarling each had two hits. Dru Fortenberry had three RBI, while Pearce had two. Fortenberry allowed one hit and two runs while striking out five in five innings to earn the win. Trey Smith threw two innings in relief.
