Panthers win; Warriors, Jackets, Conquerors fall short

Dantley Coker rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns in Southside’ 44-7 Class 5A, Region 7 victory over Columbia last Friday at SHS. 

Aleric Williams and Trey Harris also scored touchdowns for the Panthers (2-0, 1-0), while Holt Keeling scored on a 60-yard punt return. 

Southside continues region play on Friday with a visit to Scottsboro. 

Fyffe pounded out 327 rushing yards in a 49-17 route over Westbrook Christian in a Class 2A, Region 6 game last Friday (Sept. 6) in Rainbow City.

Fyffe’s Trent Thrash scored 7:06 into the first quarter on a 10-yard run. Austin Stiefel followed up with a 32-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left in the quarter. Russell Moses made both extra points to give the Red Devils a 14-0 lead. 

The Warriors (0-2, 0-1) got on the board in the opening minutes of the second quarter when Jake Kilgo completed a 32-yard pass to Noah Hunt, with the point-after by Chris Underwood. 

Thrash stretched the Red Devil lead to 21-7 with a 33-yard run with 7:29 left in the half. 

With 3:05 left in the second quarter, Westbrook cut the lead to 21-14 on Kilgo’s 5-yard scoring run. Underwood made the point-after. 

Austin Stiefel closed out the scoring for the half with a 16-yard touchdown reception from Will Mashburn with 20.9 seconds left on the clock. 

Fyffe took control of the game in the second half, outscoring Westbrook 21-3. Stiefel scored on a 40-yard interception return and 5-yard run, and Thrash scored on a 16-yard run. Moses was good on all seven PATs. 

Underwood added a 28-yard field goal to reach the 49-17 final.

Glencoe came up short to Weaver, 38-13, on Friday (Sept. 6) in the Yellow Jackets’ Class 3A, Region 5 opener. 

Dylan Stone and Taylor Daugherty both scored touchdowns for Glencoe. 

The Yellow Jackets (1-1, 0-1) host No. 3 Piedmont on Friday in another region contest. 

Coosa Christian suffered a 42-14 defeat at the hands to Donoho last Friday (Sept. 6) in a Class 1A, Region 5 contest in Anniston. 

For the Conquerors (0-2, 0-2), Ben Mills rushed for 102 yards on 25 carries, while Johnny Grizzard ran five times for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Grizzard completed 5-of-13 passes for 38 yards. Randy Washington and Jace Mills each had two catches.

Ben Mills had eight tackles, followed by Jace Mills with five and Seth Williamson with four. 

Coosa hosts region rival Cedar Bluff on Friday.
