Former Panthers help UAH

Three former Southside High School baseball standouts contributed to the University of Alabama-Huntsville’s Gulf South Conference Tournament championship on May 6 in Birmingham.

The Chargers defeated Delta State by a score of 8-3 to secure a berth in the NCAA South Regional Tournament in Tampa, Fla., last weekend, where UAH went 0-2 to finish the season with a record of 41-16, two wins shy of the program-record of 43.

UAH went 5-1 in the conference tournament, including a 6-0 semifinal victory over West Florida. It was the Chargers’ second GSC title in the history of the program.

The former Panthers playing for UAH were senior right-handed pitchers Cody Paulson and Ricky Ray Clayton and sophomore lefthander Janiel Lister.

Paulson this season posted a 3-1 record in 31.4 innings. He finished with a 5.40 earned run average with 22 strikeouts. Clayton struck out seven in eight innings of action.

In addition, Southside High head baseball coach Blake Bone played at UAH before being selected in the 11th round by the Seattle Mariners in the MLB 2000 draft, while 2001 SHS graduate Evan Bush is a UAH assistant baseball coach.
