Five Titans scored in double figures as Gadsden City smacked Clay-Chalkville, 70-50, in Class 5A Northeast Sub-Regional action on Feb. 16.

Portia Sims scored 17 points to lead all Titan scorers. Genesis McCants scored 13, while Brooke Burns netted 12 and Dajia Williams added 11. Takara Blount chipped in 10.

Gadsden City started the game sluggish offensively. Clay-Chalkville hit a pair of 3-pointers to take a 6-2 lead. The Lady Titans took their first lead of the night when Brooke Burns hit the first of her four 3-pointers to give Gadsden City an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Burns added the second of her three point shots to start the second quarter and the Lady Titans held a  14-8 lead, a lead they would never relinquish. Gadsden City would hold a 29-17 lead at the half.

Williams took the ball inside on two consecutive trips down court scoring two field goals and a free throw to build the Titans’ lead to 17 points at the beginning of the third quarter.

“We felt we had an advantage in the post,” said Coach Jeremy Brooks. “We put in some new sets to take advantage of this. ”

Gadsden City led 46-29 heading into the final frame.

Brooks was surprised at the scoring gap.

“We expected the game to be a real tight game. Clay-Chalkville is known for hitting lots of three pointers.”

The victory earned the Lady Titans a berth in the Regional tournament at Jacksonville State University.

“The trip to play at JSU is  special for the fans and players,” said Gadsden City head coach Jeremy Brooks. “The fans are close to the floor.” This will be the Lady Titans fifth trip in the last six years.

Clay-Chalkville was led by Kristian Hudson’s game high 24 points. Larian Scott added 10 points for the Lady Cougars.
