Allie Jones scored a game high 23 points to lead Sardis High to a 50-38 opening round win over West End in the Etowah County Basketball Tournament on Monday (Jan. 19) at Gadsden State.
The Lady Lions advanced to Wednesday’s semifinal round against Hokes Bluff.
Sardis head coach Josh Wallace was proud of his team’s play in what he called a rival game.
“We played hard and this game will get us ready for area play,” he said.
West End scored the game’s first points and took its only lead of the night at 2-0.
Sardis followed with a 14-4 run to lead 14-6 after one period of play.
A 17-7 run gave the Lady Lions a 31-13 lead at halftime. Jones canned 16 of her points in the first half. An 8-4 run gave the Lady Lions a 39-17 lead after three quarters. The Lady Patriots did manage to outscore Sardis 21-11 in the final period.
Tamia Timmons led West End with 10 points.
West End head coach Amy Springer was pleased with the way her team played over the final eight minutes.
“Our team finally responded and did some things we had been working on. Our 21 point outburst is promising, but we need to play that way for an entire game.”
