Fourteen games into his position as Etowah High football coach, Matt Glover’s time in Attalla has ended.
According to Attalla City Schools Superintendent Jeff Colegrove, Glover was placed on administrative leave on Thursday, Sept. 7 by the Board of Education, effective immediately.
EHS head baseball coach and assistant football coach Blake Bone (pictured above) was named interim coach.
“Blake will be responsible for all aspects of the football program,” said Colegrove. “We have confidence in Coach Bone leading our football operations until further notice.”
Bone, who during the past two football seasons has helped with the special teams units, said that his most important role as head coach will be to ensure continuity and accountability.
“My main goal is to do what I can to get the kids in the right place and at the right time and take care of the things I can take care of,” he said. “We thought it was important that we didn’t lose a (position) coach on either side of the ball and have someone here to manage people and make sure they’re doing the right things and being where they’re supposed to be.”
Bone pointed out that a number of his baseball players are on the team, so he is familiar with most of the players on the roster.
“I have relationships with a lot of these kids, and I think that was another reason why we went the way that we did. I’m really not sure what the plan is moving forward; I just know that today we have to go to Ashville and win a football game.”
The Blue Devils are currently 0-2 after losses to Springville and Fort Payne.
Glover went 8-6 with the Blue Devils. In his first season in 2022, he guided the Blue Devils to an 8-4 record and the program’s 13th straight berth in the state playoffs.
Including stops in Moody, Pinson Valley and St. Clair County over a 15-year period, Glover compiled an 84-76 record as head football coach.
