Many musical offerings on tap — free of charge

By Donna Thornton/News Editor

The sound of summer in the Gadsden area is music, with a variety of musical offerings to entertain residents and visitors – much of it free.

Downtown Gadsden Inc. Director Kay Moore invites everyone to make Mondays in June less manic by taking a lunch break with DJ Buster Porch, who will be spinning cool jazz tunes at the Water Wall between the Senior Activity Center and the Pitman Theater from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Monday.

“If you don’t know about the Water Wall, you’re missing out,” Moore said.

DGI’s Musical Mondays are a perfect opportunity to get out of the office, bring your lunch and enjoy the music and the atmosphere.

“There are tables, chairs, umbrellas and shade trees,” Moore said.

Another highlight of the summer music scene is DGI’s Third Thursday series: free concerts at the Water Wall each Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Bring coolers and food – several downtown restaurants are nearby for take-out – and enjoy an evening of live music.

The line-up for Third Thursday’s from June through October is:
June 20 – Peanut and Rush
July 18 – Sam Lewis
Aug. 15 – New Delusions
Sept. 19 – Kelli Johnson
Oct. 17 – Delnora Reed

The Hardin Center offers its Courtyard Concert Series in the Hardin Center’s outdoor New Orleans-style courtyard for a 15th season. Concerts take place every Friday and Saturday night through September, weather permitting.

The concerts are free and open to the public. The courtyard opens at 5 pm and the music starts at 7 pm. Food and beverage service is provided by Courtyard Cafe and table reservations are available by calling (256) 547-1066. The Courtyard Concert Series is made possible by The Gadsden Times, Courtyard Cafe, and the Alabama State Council on the Arts. For more information, please call (256) 543-2787, ext. 0. A weather decision is made the day of each concert at 2 pm. Cancellations will be announced on the center’s Facebook page.
