The Southeastern Conference enjoyed another successful year athletically, once again winning several national championships in a multitude of sports. In all, the league captured six national titles, including championships in baseball, softball, women’s outdoor track and field, women’s gymnastics, women’s swimming and diving and the doubles championship in men’s tennis.

Vanderbilt won its first national title in baseball by defeating Virginia in the College World Series. The Commodores had one of the best seasons in school history in winning 51 games. While Vandy didn’t win the SEC championship or even the SEC East, the Nashville squad started playing its best baseball at just the right time.

In softball, Florida defeated Alabama twice to win its first national championship in school history. Texas A&M won the women’s outdoor track and field championship, while Florida split the women’s gymnastics championship with Oklahoma. Georgia won the women’s swimming and diving national title. Tennessee’s Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese won the doubles championship in men’s tennis.

After one of the most memorable football seasons in school history, Auburn fell just short of winning the BCS national title. The Tigers lost to Florida State, 34-31, ending the SEC’s streak of seven consecutive national championships.

In men’s basketball, Kentucky had a similar run to Auburn. Although the Wildcats were the top-ranked team in the country in the preseason, they struggled throughout most of the year. Kentucky earned a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament and won five straight games to make the title game, where the Wildcats lost to Connecticut.
