Yellow Jackets, Eagles tangle for 69th time

When it’s Glencoe vs. Hokes Bluff, records can be thrown out the window.

When it’s Hokes Bluff vs. Glencoe, anything can and usually does happen.

There have been more recent nail-biting finishes in this series than in most any other. And that includes last year’s three-point overtime win by the Eagles.

“Sometimes, to beat Glencoe can make the entire season feel better,” Hokes Bluff coach Mike Robertson said. “Like last year. It was our only win but it was a good one for the program. It felt like it salvaged something.”

Glencoe coach Lee Ozmint knows that the 0-4 record doesn’t indicate the true Eagles team.

“They’re by far the best 0-4 team I’ve seen,” he said. “They’ve just fallen short in so many games. But they’re in every game – and have a chance to win every game.”

Robertson said, “We’re never satisfied with any loss but the guys are playing good football. The attitude is still good and I feel like we’re still improving.”

Meanwhile, Glencoe has experienced some of the same tight contests but have come away with a couple of victories.

“They’re a very disciplined, very well-coached team,” Robertson said of the Yellow Jackets. “They don’t have many weaknesses and that scares me, with them being Glencoe.”

Last week against White Plains, Glencoe quarterback Dylan Stone rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Thomas Ozmint added 66 yards on 18 attempts.

Mason Brown had 20 tackles, followed by Chance Duncan with 10 and Pace Ozmint and Taylor Daugherty with nine each. Will Parker had an interception.

For Hokes Bluff against Lincoln, Chase Pope gained 121 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.

Cole Williams completed 7-of-12 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown, while Chase Beggs caught three passes for 36 yards.

Noah Click led the Eagles in tackles with 15, followed by Pope with 11 and Logan Latronico and Dylan Drake with 10 each.
