Following a game that saw the Yellow Jackets turn the ball over five times, turnovers and missed tackles are two of the big things that Glencoe High’s football team is working on this week in preparation of its Class 3A, Region 5 opener.

“You can’t turn the ball over that many times and expect to win,” Glencoe coach Lee Ozmint said. “If you do that against Weaver, they are fully capable of scoring – on any interception or any fumble.

“We’ve also got to make tackles. We’ve really got to focus on the fundamentals.”

The fundamentals are what is needed to be able to make the big plays, and that’s one of the things Ozmint is trying to teach his kids.

“If you make the routine plays, they’ll eventually turn into a big play now and again,” he said. “You’ve got to be disciplined in your approach so that the little things will take care of themselves.”

Weaver’s quarterback – Tim Hawkins – concerns Ozmint.

“He’s arguably the best quarterback in our region,” the coach said. “And Christopher Troge is an outstanding running back. They’ve got speedy receivers who can catch and they’ve got a speedy defense that flies to the ball. The whole team is well coached and is so talented it’s scary.”

Last week against Westbrook, Dylan Stone gained 174 yards on 20 carries, while Thomas Ozmint rushed 23 times for 116 yards and three touchdowns.

Stone completed 9-of-20 passes for 121 yards, while Hunter Nunnally, Pace Ozmint and Jacob Bradley each caught two passes.

Mason Brown finished with 14 tackles, followed by Will Parker with nine and Grant Griffin with seven.
