With a new coach in Roger Haynes, Sylvania’s football team is throwing the ball more than ever.

Sardis coach Gene Hill witnessed as much in the Rams’ jamboree last week against Guntersville.

“I don’t put a lot of stock into jamborees, because I know they don’t show everything,” Hill said. “Everybody holds out some, but Sylvania was throwing the ball around quite a bit. The quarterback [6’4” Dillon Cambron] is tall enough to see the receivers well, and he can throw it when he has time.”

Hill noted that Guntersville’s defenders were able to put pressure on Cambron several times.

Also, Cambron lined up in the shotgun for every play.

Hill also noted that the Rams turned the ball over a few times but said they did the same thing in last year’s jamboree before having no turnovers against Sardis.

An area of concern for Hill is a Sylvania’s defense that lined up in more than one formation, making it tough for the Lions offensive coaches to guess.

As for Sardis, Hill was pretty pleased with the jamboree win over Geraldine.

“We made a few mistakes for penalties,” he said. “But overall I was happy. The defense played well. We’ve got some kids on that side that can run and they were running to the ball. If they keep that up, we’ll be okay.”

Senior quarterback Will Scott has new receivers this year. Hill said that so far, Brett Rains and Austin Hallmark are looking the best.
