Etowah County school administrators continued their education in an effort to help keep their students, faculty and staff safe.

The principals learned how to implement a new safety tool titled, “Run, Hide, Fight.”  The techniques taught would be used in case of an active shooter inside the school.

According to the Alabama Department of Homeland Security website when making a decision during an active shooter incident, individuals will generally have three options; “Run: Can you safely escape? Hide: Is there a good place to hide?  Fight: Will you take out the shooter?”

“We are pleased to offer this training to the principals and look forward to offering it to the public,” said Sheriff Todd Entrekin.

The administrators’ training took place Sept. 11 and 12 in the multi-purpose room at the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office.

“This class is just a small portion of our comprehensive plan in helping ensure that our community is safe,” Entrekin continued.

Since January all sheriffs’ office deputies have participated in specialized active shooter training and outfitted with specific equipment, safety and seminars have been conducted for businesses, schools and churches and more than 400 citizens have completed a firearms safety course.

Additional information will be sent at a later date concerning the details for public “Run, Hide, Fight” courses.
