The Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts will offer a summer jazz workshop, June 22-26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The week long jazz camp will be directed by Matt Leder. Matt Leder is the Music Director/Instructor at Gadsden State Community College and has an extensive background in jazz studies; including mentorship from Ellis Marsalis, Irvin Mayfield, Clyde Kerr, and many others.

Participants will be immersed in a fun, focused, and supportive environment. The program offers instrumentalists and vocalists an opportunity to perform with motivated peers and the opportunity to study with professional musicians. The curriculum will include jazz history, critical listening skills, improvisation, and ensembles ranging from jazz combos to a big band. This is an excellent opportunity to keep up your musical skills over the summer and an opportunity to learn America’s music! Family and friends are invited to attend a free concert at the end of the week.

The workshop is designed for musicians of all ages, including high school and advanced middle school students, with a prerequisite of 18 months of instruction. Participants will be divided into groups based on an audition to be held the first day of the workshop. Classes will be tailored to each individual’s experience and knowledge and will be led by professional jazz artists and educators.

The fee for the workshop is $150. Financial aid is available and the deadline for scholarship application is June 11.

The registration form is online at http://www.culturalarts.com/enrollment-forms/ and Scholarship information on line http://www.culturalarts.com/financial-aid/. For more information call 256-543-2787 ext. 29.
