The Oct. 16 meeting of the Etowah County Commission marked the last meeting for District 2 Commissioner Perry Gwin, who served two terms on the commission before electing to retire.
Gwin’s fellow commissioners wished him well and thanked him for his service to the county and the people of his district. Commission Chairman Jeff Overstreet, absent from the meeting, sent a message by email thanking Gwin for his service.
Commissioner Tim Choate said Gwin has done an outstanding job for District 2, taking not only his district, but the county to heart in his service. Beyond working in the county, Choate said Gwin had participated on state boards and represented Etowah County on a state and federal level.
Choate said he never knew of Gwin being asked to participate in a committee or on a board that he did not serve.
It was a bit of an emotional meeting for Gwin, as he thanked the county’s staff for the work they do to make the county function, and the people of District 2 who entrusted him to represent them.
He thanked his fellow commissioners for their service and charged them as the apostle Paul charged the Corinthians: “Be on your guard: stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.. Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13-14.
