The new Rainbow City police chief knows his way around Rainbow City and around the duties of being chief.

Greg Carroll was named police chief last week after a unanimous vote of the Rainbow City Council. Carroll had served as acting police chief since August 2012 when police chief Rick Hill retired.

Being named chief is a culmination of a career that has seen Carroll rise through the ranks of the department to become its leader.

Carroll said he joined the Rainbow City Police Department in 1993 as a patrolman and spent four years on patrol. He then moved into investigations and attained the rank of sergeant. For a time he worked narcotics, along with his investigative duties. Over those years, he went from sergeant to lieutenant to captain, before being selected to head the department as acting chief while the city council considered replacements for Hill.

“I’ve done everything aspect of this job you can do,” Carroll said of Rainbow City police work, and it has been a good way to prepare for the top slot.

“You know what’s going to hit you,” Carroll said, of his preparation.

Carroll said he didn’t foresee big changes in the department.

The big change for him, he said, would be relocating from an office upstairs, where the investigators’ offices are, to downstairs, where most of the department’s personnel are located.

Other than that, Carroll said, any changes made will be small ones.
